Value retailer Mr Price has expanded its home segment to now sell a wide range of wallpapers. The move is much in line with the rise in DIY home projects, as consumers continue to improve their personal spaces while stuck at home during the lockdown.
Retailers of home improvement and those offering home décor products have performed well during the pandemic because of an increased interest in DIY projects. Mr Price Home had a total sales growth of 11% for the third quarter to 26 December 2020, the retailer said in its latest update.
The retailer added that customer demand for household merchandise remained at high levels with many people continuing to work from their homes. It also said that it expects the home trend will continue on its upwards trajectory.
Mr Price last week also acquired online homeware retailer Yuppiechef, a move that strengthens its foothold in the home segment and is part of management’s quest for new growth opportunities.
The wallpapers come in 10m by 53cm sheets and cover a wall surface of 5m2.
There is a range of different colours, textures and patterns and the prices range from as little as R299 to R799. The retailer also has guidelines that help customers calculate how much wallpaper they may need for their DIY project. It also has tool sets and bonding agents to complete the job.Mr Price’s new range of wallpapers.Mr Price’s new range of wallpapers.
By comparison, Massmart’s Builders Warehouse has a wider range and is slightly cheaper. For a roll the same size as what Mr Price is offering, you will pay R265 and the highest price listed on its website is R550, a 30% price difference.
Mr Price is more comparable with homeware group Leroy Merlin’s offering – although much wider, its prices have the same starting point of R299 and go up to R799.
